Abhayan Jawaharlal did his studies in Kerala. After completing his B.Com degree in Cost Accounting in 1992, Abhayan earned his bachelor’s degree in Law in 1995 from the Government Law College, Thiruvananthapuram, University of Kerala and was admitted to the bar in 1996.
Currently he is the Head - Group Legal of Biocon Limited, India’s permier Biotechnology and Biopharmaceutical Company. Now he heads the legal divisions of the Biocon Group consisting of four companies – Biocon Limited, Biocon Biopharmaceuticals Private Limited, Syngene International Private Limited and Clinigene International Private Limited. He is responsible for contacts management and negotiation, licensing, litigation, trademarks and copyrights prosecution and enforcement, anti-counterfeiting, real estate matters, employment matters, litigation, statutory compliance and all other legal issues of the Biocon Group. International legal transactions, technology transfer in biotechnology and biopharmaceuticals, licensing, research collaboration and joint ventures are crucial aspects of his job profile in Biocon.
He has over ten years of relevant experience in intellectual property and related laws and over five years of relevant experience in IP related litigation. Besides litigation, he specializes in the areas of filing, prosecution, protection and enforcement of trademarks, copyrights, domain names, geographical indications and related issues of the Internet. He makes regular speeches and lectures on varied aspects of intellectual property laws. His legal career spanning over twelve years saw him working with India’s leading law firms in Chennai, Bangalore and Delhi and he earned experience representing the Government of India, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Information Technology, CSIR and its various labs and a number of Indian and foreign companies and individuals for the protection and enforcement of IPR.
